Another reason you shouldn't focus entirely one Google
Everyone is so focused on ranking well on Google and getting a high PR that they do things that are very silly in my eyes. Some folks will ONLY trade links with sites that are identical to theirs because Google doesn't like it. Some won't trade with sites that have too many links because Google doesn't like it.
There are many things that webmasters read online and take way too serious! You have to keep in mind that absolutely NO ONE knows what the search engines are going to do or what their exact patterns are so you shouldn't believe everything you read. I know for a fact that ALL links to your site help to some extent.
I have sites with links from sites of every type of category there is and these sites do great even on Google!
Besides the other search engines are not so far behind Google and you should understand that they ALSO use back-links as a way to give you a boost although the others don't seem to care as much as Google about certain things (like penalizing you for links from NON reltated sites). Take a look:

- Absolutely, - like what would google do without links?
Comment by Scott Burton:
Without links, Google wouldn't index new sites, so they would effectively be a pay for inclusion search engine, which would drastically reduce their usefulness to the web user.
While I don't know how any search engine, now or later, will view a particular link, personally I will accept links from, and link to, any site I think has traffic who might be good for my site, or whose site might be good for my traffic.
No matter what search engines do, a link is still good for routing users of the other site to your site, if your sites are compatible.
